DBA Sessions – Oracle EBS SQL Report

Oracle E-Business Suite SQL report from the Enginatics Library powered by Blitz Report™. Oracle EBS module: Database Administration · all Database Administration reports

Overview

Current database sessions with their Oracle EBS user, responsibility, form or concurrent request, the SQL being executed, wait event, blocking session, and PGA, temp and undo usage. All sizes are shown in MB.

Status Duration is the time since the session last changed between active and inactive, so for an active session it is the run time of the current call. Temp Used and Undo Used are the space the session holds at the time of the report.

For a Blitz Report run inside a web service call, from the Excel add-in or a Blitz FSG drilldown, the user and responsibility are those of the run. Blitz Report Webservice Runs only lists the runs still executing. The Excel clients stop waiting after 15 minutes, so such a run active for longer has no client reading its result. Schedule the report with Active only, Blitz Report Webservice Runs only and Status Duration Minutes From 15 to be notified of them.

The Kill DB Session, Disconnect DB Session and Kill Server Process columns contain the commands to end a session.

Running This SQL Without Blitz Report

The SQL source can be run in any SQL client. Some Oracle EBS SQL reports in this library use functions from the utility package xxen_util – install it first. Blitz Report™ adds parameters, Excel output with pivots, scheduling and security on top.

Case Study & Technical Analysis: DBA Sessions

Executive Summary

This report is a live view of the database sessions connected to the Oracle E-Business Suite instance. For each session it shows the EBS user and responsibility, the form or concurrent request that owns it, the SQL being executed, the wait event, any blocking session, and the PGA, temporary and undo space it holds. It is used by DBAs during performance incidents, by support teams who must find the session behind a stuck form or request, and by administrators who need to end a runaway session safely.

Technical Architecture (High Level)

Primary Tables

Logical Relationships

  1. GV$SESSION is joined to GV$PROCESS on instance and process address, which provides the operating system process.
  2. GV$SESSION is joined to XXEN_REPORT_RUNS through the run identifier that the module and action carry, and to the running concurrent request through the Oracle session identifier.
  3. Temporary usage, transaction and I/O data are each aggregated per session in separate inline views, then joined on instance and session address.
  4. The entry procedure is found by joining the session’s PL/SQL object and subprogram identifiers to DBA_PROCEDURES.

FAQ

Q: How do I find the session that is blocking a form? A: Run the report with Blocked Sessions only set to Yes. The Blocking Inst Id and Blocking SID columns identify the blocking session.

Q: How do I end a session safely? A: Use the Kill DB Session or Disconnect DB Session command for a non-background session. The Kill Server Process command ends the operating system process and should be used with care.
