INV Item Upload 11i – Oracle EBS SQL Report

Oracle E-Business Suite SQL report from the Enginatics Library powered by Blitz Report™.

Overview

INV Inventory Item Upload ====================== This upload can be used to create and update Inventory Items.

It supports creation of Inventory Items:

It supports update of existing Inventory Items either by:

It also supports the item category assignment to multiple Inventory Category Sets

Upload Mode parameter: Create - allows creation of new items only Update - allows updates to existing items only Create, Update – allows the creation of new items and the updating of existing items

Create Empty File parameter Setting the Create Empty File parameter to Yes will open an empty upload excel. This parameter is only applicable to the ‘Update’ and ‘Create, Update’ upload modes and suppresses the download of existing item details. ‘Create’ upload mode always opens an empty upload excel regardless of the setting of this parameter. This is useful for users who want to paste the details of the items to be updated into an empty upload excel file from another source.

Update on Create Null Handling In Create, Update mode the upload allows a Create action to update an existing item if it already exists. This parameter determines how null values are handled when a create action results in an update to an existing item. ‘Null means Clear’ - the upload will clear the data from the corresponding column (set it to null). ‘Null means No Change’ - the upload will leave the data in the corresponding column unchanged.

Number of Import Workers parameter This parameter determines the number of Item Import worker concurrent requests that will be submitted in parallel to import the uploaded items into Oracle Inventory. The number of workers can be increased to improve the throughput of the process when uploading a larger number of item changes. Remaining parameters The remaining parameters are used to restrict the items to be downloaded for update in ‘Update’ or ‘Create, Update’ mode, and only when the ‘Create Empty File’ parameter is not set to Yes.

Available Templates Use the pre-defined templates to restrict the Item Attributes to be displayed and updated in the report. Alternatively, users can define their own custom template containing the Item Attributes of interest.

NOTE: When creating new child items, the master-controlled item attributes are not passed to the Import API so they are defaulted from the Master Org. When updating existing child items, the master-controlled item attributes are copied directly from the Master Org, in case there is any pre-existing inconsistency between the Child Org and Master Org values. Effectively this means, for creation/updates to items in child organizations, the uploaded values for Master Controlled Item attributes are not considered by upload.

Case Study & Technical Analysis: INV Item Upload 11i

Executive Summary

The INV Item Upload 11i creates and updates Inventory Items in Oracle Inventory from an Excel spreadsheet. Each row describes one item in one organization, covering main attributes, inventory controls, costing, purchasing, planning, order management, service and the item’s descriptive flexfield values, with optional manufacturer part numbers and category assignments. Item masters, supply chain planners and implementation teams use it to set up new items, copy items from a template or an existing item, and maintain attributes in bulk across master and child organizations. The report runs in Excel via Blitz Report, and changes are loaded through the Item Import process.

Technical Architecture (High Level)

Primary Tables

Logical Relationships

  1. MTL_SYSTEM_ITEMS_VL is joined to MTL_PARAMETERS to obtain the master organization of each item’s organization.
  2. MTL_ITEM_CATEGORIES is joined to the category set and category tables, and is included only when the template includes category columns.
  3. MTL_MFG_PART_NUMBERS is joined on the master organization or the item, depending on whether the template includes manufacturer part numbers.
  4. Many attribute values are resolved through XXEN_UTIL.MEANING lookups on the item’s codes, and the remaining names through single-row scalar subqueries on their master tables.

FAQ

Q: How do I assign an item to a second category set? A: Repeat the Organization Code and Item Number on a separate row, and enter the new Category Set and Item Category on that row before uploading.

Q: Why are master-controlled attributes of child items not taken from my spreadsheet? A: The Import API defaults them from the master organization for new child items, and copies them for existing ones.

Q: How do I delete an item category assignment? A: Download the item, then set the Delete Category column to Yes on the row for the category set and category to remove; mandatory category sets cannot be deleted.
