Case Study & Technical Analysis: Blitz Report Add-in Environment Setup
Executive Summary
This report generates the connection configuration file for the Blitz Report Excel add-in. It reads the webservice settings and login method configured for the Oracle EBS environment, together with the database name and the installed languages, and writes them into a single row that the Excel add-in can read. Administrators and power users open the output in Excel with the add-in installed, and the add-in configures itself to point at the right environment. It removes manual typing of URLs, ORDS client identifiers and language codes when a user connects to a new or cloned instance.
Business Challenge
- Manual configuration errors: Typing a webservice URL, ORDS client identifier or login URL by hand is a common source of failed connections.
- Multiple environments: Teams that work across development, test and production need a reliable way to identify which environment a workbook targets.
- Language settings: The Excel add-in must know the database NLS language and the installed EBS languages to present report output correctly.
- Onboarding: New users need a working connection without an administrator walking them through each setting.
The Solution
- Environment identity: The database name from the session user environment is returned as the environment name.
- Connection settings: The connection type, webservice URL, login method and login URL are taken from the webservice configuration.
- ORDS credentials: The ORDS client identifier and client secret are returned only when the connection type is ORDS.
- Session user: The name of the current EBS user is returned so the add-in can pre-fill the login.
- Language list: The NLS language of the database and the list of installed or base EBS languages are returned, with the base language ordered first.
Technical Architecture (High Level)
Primary Tables
V$PARAMETER: the database NLS language setting.FND_LANGUAGES_VL: the installed EBS languages, with their descriptions, used for the language list.DUAL: the single-row source that anchors the query.
Logical Relationships
- The webservice settings are read from the
XXEN_WEBSERVICESpackage functions, which return the connection type, URL, login method and login URL. - The database name and session user come from the session context and the EBS global user name.
- The NLS language is a scalar subquery on
V$PARAMETERfiltered to the name nls_language. - The language list is a scalar subquery on
FND_LANGUAGES_VL, filtered to installed flags B and I, and aggregated into one delimited string.
Parameters & Filtering
The report has no user parameters. Its output is a single row, and the values it returns are fixed by the environment in which it is run.
Performance & Optimization
- The output is one row built from
DUAL, so the report does no table scanning of business data. - The language list is aggregated inside one scalar subquery with a size-limited result, so the output stays within a single cell.
- ORDS credentials are returned only when the connection type requires them, so unused values are never written to the output.
FAQ
Q: How do I configure the Blitz Report Excel add-in for a new environment? A: Run this report in that environment, open the output file in Excel with the add-in installed, and the add-in reads the connection settings from the file.
Q: Why is the ORDS client secret blank in my output? A: The client identifier and secret are returned only when the connection type is ORDS. For other connection types they are left empty.
Q: What does the NLS Languages column contain? A: It lists the installed EBS languages with their descriptions and language codes, with the base language first.
